Today, April 28, 2010, the Daphne High School International Baccalaureate program went to Antarctica! Using technology, the class, along with numerous other schools in Alabama, had an interactive interview with UAB researchers who have been in Antarctica conducting experiments. Students were exposed to the research being done and allowed to ask the Biologist questions about their experiences in Antarctica. The IB class at DHS hopes that this won't be the last journey. The videoconference enabled the students to explore a region of the world that they might never be able to see. The exploration team from UAB has been in the icy Antarctic waters on this expedition since February and will stay until June 2010. The veteran team is in familiar waters as they explore undersea forests to collect microalgae, sponges and more. The expedition, funded by a grant of the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs, is part of their ongoing quest to understand predator-prey dynamics in the unique Antarctic marine plant and animal communities.
